Insects — including grasshoppers — were recurring subjects in French jewelry of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, reflecting the period’s fascination with the natural world and the expressive use of colored enamel. This antique French 18 kt gold and enamel grasshopper brooch survives in its original fitted retailer’s case, a particularly valuable piece of object history that helps explain its notably well-preserved condition. The case bears the stamp of The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd, 112 Regent Street, London W, preserving evidence of the brooch’s original place of sale.
